Using Ammonia to Bend Plywood

Using Ammonia to Bend  Plywood : (with video)

 Here are some tips.

 Step 1:
First step to bending Plywood with Ammonia, is to "Paint" or "Coat" the plywood on both sides. Do not soak, but just paint or dampen with the ammonia. When you have completed one side, turn the plywood over and complete on the other side. Then turn over, for another layer and then repeat about 2 more times to ensure the plywood is now bendable.

 Step 2:

Once you have dampened or "Coated" the Plywood with the Ammonia mixture, right away begin to bend the plywood into the desired form and use a clamp, jibs, or tape to secure the shape, and hold it until it dries. The plywood will become bendable within 1 or 2 minutes of applying Ammonia.

 Step 3:

The plywood will go slightly off colour, (green) while the ammonia is being applied to the board. Once the plywood returns to the natural colour, after the ammonia has taken to the plywood, it will regain the natural strength that it had before.

 Step 4:

Remove clamps/tape/jibs and now your work is complete the ammonia has allowed you to bend the plywood in a relatively easy fashion. This type is also called the frankentrick.

Staining Luan Plywood

Staining Luan Plywood Video Series

Signboard is a  product that designed for exterior use, it works well inside the home in areas that need to be smooth and hold up well to moisture. This product resists inclement weather areas well. It is often used for exterior signs and sub-board underneath laminates for countertops. It is recommended to apply an exterior grade primer and paint to this product if using in an exterior application. Primer and paint adhere nicely to the paper face. When applied with exterior grade primer and paint, this product holds up much better than regular plywood  Read More

MDF Plywood Veneer : Informational (Luan)

What is MDF Plywood Veneer? Well I'll give you a some background of it's background here. MDF Plywood Veneer is actually an acronym for Medium Density Fibreboard. It is a specially engineered product which is created when hardwood or softwood is broken down into fibers and then combined with wax in a resin. This then forms panels (plywood) by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF Plywood is actually denser than regular plywood, but can be used in the same applications or those that might call for greater strenght than run of the mill plywood.  Read More

Luan is made from trees of the Shorea family, they are light weight and capable of absorbing moisture like a sponge. If you use Luan backed birch veneer plywood you run the likelihood that the back side will absorb more moisture than the veneered side causing the panels to buckle between adhesive points. Luan veneered plywood does have one quality that makes it viable for some projects and that is it’s appearance, which can mimic other high quality woods, with the proper staining and paiting.

DRIcore Subfloor

This an easy-to-install subfloor system designed for basements. The panels are equipped with air gap technology to protect, insulate, and cushion finished floors. They have OSB top and polyethylene bottom. It also has an R-value of 1.7 and can increase the temperature of a finished floor to 3.2°C (6˚F). DRIcore Subfloor allows concrete to breathe, which reduces the potential for mold and mildew. Each panel is 2 foot x 2 foot and weighs 7.5lbs.

How to Install Surface Source Floating Vinyl Plank Flooring Over Luan

How to Install Surface Source Floating Vinyl Plank Flooring Over Luan

Vinyl flooring is affordable and durable and water resistant which is made in a variety of colours and patterns, making it a first choice in all types of home renovations such as for the bathroom, kitchen and laundry. Once installed it can form tightly with the vinyl flooring and the surface beneath it. So the use of luan plywood underlayment is required. The good news is that it is easy to install for all purposes. While luan plywood is smooth one on surface, it is easy to install below or under vinyl flooring. - Keep in mind it is not always the best fit for all types of vinyl flooring.

Luan is 1/4 thick and it comes in a variety of sheet sizes including 4x8 sheets. It is made from various wood materials and is manufactured by layering thin strips of wood at right angles and then bonding them under pressure to form larger panels. Each luan panel has a rough side and a smooth side. The smooth side faces upwards when installing the vinyl flooring attaching itself to this surface.

Installing Luan Panels

Luan installs on top of a subfloor since the sheets are not strong enough or engineered for that exact purchase. Start in one corner of the room and begin to lay a full panel of luan perpendicular to the form of the subfloor panels. Leave a gap of about 1/16 of an inch between the walls and the luan panel. Use a staple gun to insert 1/4 inch crown staples every 6 inches across the plane of the luan panel and every 2 inches along the edges. Install additional luan panels the same way, and remember to leave a 1/16 of an inch gap between expansion gaps and panels.

Quick Tips

Use a chalk guide line on the underside of the luan panel. Cut the luan panel with a circular saw from the backside to prevent the splintering of the face of the sheet. Luan is lightweight and thin enough that you can cut a smaller area from the top side with a utility knife. Make sure that several pressure cuts in the groove rather than trying to cut through the panel with one forceful cut. Since vinyl flooring shows every bump and groove, it is very important that the staples are flush with or slightly below the surface of the luan plywood. An easy way to check this is by raising the edge of a large metal taping knife over the surface of the luan. If any staples are raised or sticking then you will hear a clicking sound of metal hitting on top of metal. Tap any of the extending staples lightly with a hammer to make sure they are flush with the surface of the luan plywood. Before installing vinyl make sure to sweep and vacuum all the particles and dust from the underlyament of luan.

Things to Keep in Mind

When using luan as an underlayment for vinyl its better to use a sheet of vinyl flooring as opposed to vinyl tile. Although luan is often very smooth on the surface, it doesn't repel water very well, and it tends to warp when it gets wet. This will mean that the seams between the vinyl tiles allow water from spils or mopping can soak into the luan which will result in swollen plywood and lumps that are going to become visible on the surface of the vinyl floor.
